Deciding to build a new home can feel daunting, especially a home that is designed just for you. Let’s explore and debunk some of the most common misconceptions about building a custom home.

1- Building a custom home takes forever
When you work with a custom design-build firm the process can be surprisingly quick. Jamestown Estate Homes is often able to create a fully custom home plan tailored to our buyers’ specific preferences in about one month, from there it’s typically 60-90 days before we can get started depending on the permitting/HOA approval, and our team consistently completes new custom homes in 6 months or less from when the foundation is poured. Of course, there can be nuanced exceptions (permitting times with various homeowners associations or municipalities causing the greatest delays), but our clients have often been able to move into their new home in one year- 13 months from when we start the design process. This is one of the many benefits of working with an experience expert custom home builder like Jamestown Estate Homes.
2- Building a custom home always costs more
This is probably the biggest misconception in my opinion. Building custom means that you get what you want and only what you want. You can invest more in the areas that you enjoy, and you don’t have to have anything that you don’t want! We have buyers who build custom because they don’t want a fireplace in the their great room (or at all even). Some people don’t want to have a tub that they’re not going to use in their primary suite, and some volume home builders can be inflexible with any sort of changes.
3- Building a custom home will hurt your resale value
More often than not, people are not as unique as they think they are. By working with a tested design-build team, the team at Jamestown Estate Homes can be your sounding board. We will let you know whenever we think a choice might be “too specific” so that you can have that perspective when you are making your choices. Chances are though that there’s other people who feel the same way.
4- If you build custom, your home could get outdated quickly
Trends come and go cyclically, and what’s hot today might lose favor tomorrow. Our experienced Design Center staff stays up to date on the latest trends, but their goal is for our clients to have a home that brings them joy for years to come.
5- Going through the process of building a custom home is a lot of work
It certainly can be if you work with the wrong builder! The way we’ve designed our process, clients complete their interior selections prior to the commencement of construction. We will have 3 or 4 walkthroughs during construction (most of which can also be handled virtually), but other than that, sit back and enjoy watching your custom home come together.
